Must Know Spring Cleaning Tips

Staying organized It’s spring again, everything is feeling fresh and new, except that is for our homes sometimes. Which is probably why so many people engage in that little ritual known as Spring Cleaning. Whether you have a local business or are looking to work on your home here are some tips we think come in handy for our self storage Kinston, NC community this time of year.

As you are getting rid of all the clutter that has accumulated over the past year, don’t forget that some of it can be recycled. We think figuring out what can and can’t be recycled can be confusing that is why we like this great article form Real Simple. We were surprised to find out that even though plastic bottles can be recycled their tops are a no-no.

To clean your painted walls start with a clean cloth or sponge and water. If you have a stubborn stain you can dip the cloth or sponge into water mixed with a little dish washing liquid and If the stain still persists, apply a few drops of soap directly onto the wet sponge or cloth. Read this and other great suggestions from House Beautiful.

Write off all those donations you make to charitable organizations. Make a list as you are packing your donations up and get a receipt from the organization. You can use Good Will’s Valuation Guide for donations to determine the value of the items.

Spring Cleaning doesn’t have to mean spending money on expensive cleaners. There are many cleaners you can make on your own with ingredients you may already have. We like this one from The Mint to clean tough stains in the shower, combine a ½ cup baking soda, 1/3 cup ammonia, ¼ cup vinegar, and six cups of water in a plastic spray bottle.

When it comes to mildew, prevention is always easier than clean-up.  Martha Stewart suggests keeping surfaces clean, improving air circulation and reducing dampness. For instance if you have a poorly ventilated basement use open shelving and a dehumidifier or fan. To keep stored items safe be sure to store them in airtight plastic containers. Consider using a desiccant, like silica gel, to keep things dry.

We hope you have a fabulous Spring!
